Stored in your browser

A few preferences and the things you save in the tools are kept in your browser's storage so they survive a reload. They never leave your device, and clearing this site's data in your browser removes them. Local storage keys start with whetstone::

Key or database What it holds
whetstone:site:theme Your light or dark theme choice.
whetstone:site:period:* The time period you last picked on stats pages.
whetstone:hots:* Heroes of the Storm: your hero pool and favourites ("pool"), the hero grid's dimming choice, the draft tool's sort mode, "suggest from" choice and whether it also lists suggestions for the other team, and the game mode you last picked on stats pages.
whetstone:mtga:* MTG Arena: meta decklists you saved, your meta comparison choice, the wildcards you own and whether you prefer mythics and rares in upgrade suggestions.
whetstone-mtga MTG Arena card data cache (an IndexedDB database): a copy of the public card index the tools analyse with, one record per card pool, replaced when the card data is updated, so the multi-megabyte download happens once. It holds no information about you.
whetstone:pokemon:* Pokémon Champions: teams you saved and the team currently open in the builder (the team preview reads it too).

Offline copy

A service worker keeps a copy of the site's scripts, styles and icons, a small offline page, plus the pages, data files, images and tool workers you have opened, so tools keep working on a flaky connection. Saved pages and data files are dropped after a week, images after a month. It lives in your browser's cache storage (caches whose names start with whetstone) and is removed with the rest of the site data.

Share links

Drafts, decks and teams you share are encoded after the # in the link. Browsers don't send that part to any server; it only means something to the person who opens the link.

Requests to other sites

  • Hosting. Pages are served by GitHub Pages. GitHub may log technical data such as IP addresses for security and operations, as described in the GitHub General Privacy Statement.
  • MTG Arena card images and lookups. MTG Arena pages load card images from Scryfall's image servers (cards.scryfall.io). If you tick the option to look up card names that aren't in the built-in index, only those names are sent to Scryfall's API (api.scryfall.com). Those requests go straight from your browser to Scryfall, under Scryfall's privacy policy.
  • Videos and streams, only on click. Heroes of the Storm guide videos and live streams show a plain card first. Nothing is requested from YouTube or Twitch until you press Play here; the player then loads from www.youtube-nocookie.com or player.twitch.tv under their own privacy policies (see YouTube videos below). Open on YouTube and Open on Twitch are ordinary links.
  • Everything else (data files, hero portraits, ability icons, Pokémon sprites, scripts and styles) is served from this site. Outbound links to guides and sources take you to those sites, under their own policies.

YouTube videos

Heroes of the Storm hero pages can list guide videos. Whetstone uses the YouTube API Services to look them up: once a day, the build looks up the recent public uploads of a short list of community channels and keeps each video's id, title, channel name, date, length and view count. It never asks for, receives or stores anything about you or any other viewer, and it uses no YouTube account. The video list is refreshed on every daily build and anything older than 30 days is no longer shown or kept.

When you choose to play a video here, or follow a link to YouTube, YouTube's own terms and privacy policy apply to that player or page. By using those YouTube features you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service, and Google handles the data under the Google Privacy Policy. You can review or revoke access that any app has to your Google data at Google's security settings (Whetstone never asks for such access).
